Our mentorship program pairs junior members of the Aneurysm-NL community with an experienced mentor for a period of one year. During this year, mentors and mentees are expected to have at least two meaningful conversations to support personal and professional development. After the initial year, the mentorship can be extended if both parties wish to continue.
All PhD students/junior postdocs working on aneurysms are welcome to join the program.

Barend Mees
Professor of Vascular Repair and Regeneration, Vascular Surgeon at Maastricht UMC+
His clinical area of interest is the (endovascular) treatment of (complex) aortic pathology and peripheral vascular disease, including diabetic foot. His main research focus areas are vascular biology (aneurysm and atherosclerosis), vascular tissue engineering, and innovative endovascular techniques. He is the inventor of the MAZE Box, a new hands-on simulator for endovascular surgery, and co-director of the European Vascular Course.

Hanneke Takkenberg
Professor of Clinical Decision Making in Cardio-Thoracic Interventions and co-director of the Netherlands Women's Health research & innovation Centerat the Erasmus MC Rotterdamand Professor of Management Education focusing on Women in Business at Rotterdam School of Management.
At the Erasmus MC, her current research focuses on prognosis and clinical and shared decision making in cardiovascular interventions, with special attention to male-female differences. Her research at RSM broadly focuses on network analysis, with a particular focus on women’s organisations as well as personal networks.

Mervyn Vergouwen
Associate Professor, Stroke Neurologist at UMC Utrecht
His research focuses on risk prediction and preventive treatment of unruptured intracranial aneurysms, the diagnosis of (aneurysmal) subarachnoid hemorrhage, and the prevention and treatment of in-hospital complications following subarachnoid hemorrhage, including rebleeding, delayed cerebral ischemia, hydrocephalus, and infections, as well as their impact on patient outcomes.

Irene van der Schaaf
Professor of Neurovascular Interventional Radiology, Interventional Neuroradiologist at UMC Utrecht
As a clinical researcher, she works on image-guided endovascular treatments for vascular diseases in the brain, such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. Irene studies and implements improvements in these treatments, using new imaging techniques and artificial intelligence.

Jeroen Boogaarts
Professor of Open and Endovascular Neurosurgery, Neurosurgeon at Radboud UMC Nijmegen
He investigates various treatments for neurovascular disorders such as aneurysms, focusing primarily on open surgery and endovascular procedures. He also investigates treatments that can counteract the delayed damage that occurs in a subset of patients approximately one week after endovascular procedures.

Jesper Hjortnaes
Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon at Leiden UMC
He leads translational cardiovascular projects, focusing on engineering myocardial tissue akin to the human heart. In addition, he works on clinical research regarding aortic root surgery, aortic surgery, dissections, endocarditis and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) for heart failure. By building on an extensive disease modelling toolbox, ranging from the lab, to animals to tissue models, he aims to improve health for all patients with cardiovascular disease.

Kak Khee Yeung
Professor of personalized therapy in vascular surgery, Vascular Surgeon at Amsterdam UMC
Her research focuses on the etiology, new imaging techniques, and treatment of aortic aneurysms and dissections by using biobanking, patient's specific cells, data platforms, advanced imaging and artificial intelligence. She also studies treatment of aortic occlusive diseases with microbubbles and nanomedicine techniques. Alongside her research activities, she has extensive clinical expertise in complex endovascular aortic repair.

Kevin Veen
Assistant Professor at Erasmus MC Rotterdam
He studied patient outcomes after tricuspid valve interventions. His current research focuses on big data in cardiothoracic surgery, epidemiology and advanced statistical analyses of observational data. Furthermore, he is a consultant at the EUROMACS registry, the database coordinator of the HVS aortic valve database and the research fellow of the heart valve disease standard dataset at the international consortium of health outcome measurement.

Leon Schurgers
Professor of Biochemistry of Vascular Calcification at Maastricht University
The focus of his current work is elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which vascular remodeling is initiated and propagated. Key cellular events include phenotypic switching of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and the role of oxidative stress, extracellular vesicles, and calcification. He aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of vascular remodeling in health and vascular disease using primary and iPSC patient derived SMCs.

Sandra Loerakker
Professor of Modeling in Mechanobiology at TU Eindhoven
Her research focuses on modeling the mechanobiology of native and engineered cardiovascular tissues using integrated computational and experimental methods, in order to obtain an improved understanding of the biological mechanisms responsible for soft tissue development, homeostasis, and disease, and to translate those findings into novel therapies in the field of regenerative medicine.

Victor Volovici
Cerebrovascular and Skull base Neurosurgeon at Erasmus MC Rotterdam
His research focuses on the methodology behind current research into the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. His clinical research encompasses cerebrovascular pathology, aneurysms, AVMs and pediatric cerebrovascular disease in the broadest sense. Another area of research encompasses most effective training modalities and programmes for microsurgery.

Ynte Ruigrok
Professor of genetics of cerebrovascular diseases, Stroke Neurologist at UMC Utrecht
The overall aim of her research is to identify patients who are at high risk of developing intracranial aneurysms and subsequent aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhages. It is her ambition to increase insight in underlying disease processes, improve detection of aneurysms in high risk patients and optimize treatment. Her research has a strong translational view in which she combines genetics, epidemiology and imaging of intracranial aneurysms.

Ingrid van der Pluijm
Associate Professor of Vascular Surgery, and Molecular Genetics at Erasmus MC Rotterdam
Her research focuses on unraveling the molecular mechanisms that drive vascular aging and aneurysm development. She investigates how therapeutic and dietary interventions influence these processes, with the ultimate goal of identifying compounds that slow vascular aging, improve vascular health, and extend healthspan. Ingrid is a board member of the Erasmus MC Cardiovascular Institute and leading research coordinator.
